Sujit Karmakar

Founder and Artistic Director, Banipur Sundaram Dance Institution

Sujit Karmakar is a performer, choreographer, teacher and mentor of many young artists. Sujit began his early training from Late Guru Debi Prasad Mitra. He is Sangeet Bisaharad on Bharat Natyam and Kathak. He has done M.A. in kathak with first class from Rabindra Bharati University (Kolkata) India. Sujit is graced enough to get the guidance of Guru Anita Mallick in Bharat Natyam and Guru Kanan Sen in Kathak. In 1986, Sujit has been selected through audition in the world renowned troupe of Tanusree Shankar Dance Company (TSDC), which was previously known as Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Arts. He has participated in workshops/ residencies conducted by International Choregraphers like Jacquelyn Buglisi, Andre Tyson, Jaan Freeman, Janet Kaylo, Margaret Jenkins, Paul Taylor on various dance techniques. He has also participated in various workshops by Pandit Birju Maharaj. He has work experience with the world renowned troupe of Ananda and Tanusree Shankar for 20 years, traveling all over India and abroad like US, UK, Scotland, Russia, New Zealand, France, Monte Carlo, Spain, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Israel and Mexico. He has also performed in dance dramas choreographed by Shobna Jaising and Kumudini Lakhia. He performed with "Sampad" based in Birmingham in 2000. He also performed in a drance drama "Padmavati" in Italy and Paris which was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Tanusree Shankar in the year 2008. He also participated in the opening ceremonies of SAF Games in 1998 and the World Cup Cricket 1996. He works as a choregrapher in the TV programme Dance Bangla Dance on Zee Bangla.

Rashmi Karmakar

Senior troupe member, Dance Teacher, Banipur Sundaram Dance Institution

Rashmi Karmakar is a senior faculty member of Banipur Sundaram Dance Institution. She instructs students in Kathak and contemporary dance routines. She is also involved in the day to day administrative duties of the institution. Rashmi is a former senior troupe member of the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company. She performed classical and contemporary routines across productions all over India and abroad in places like US, London, Germany, Geneva, Lausanne, Monaco, Spain, Indonesia, Mauritius, Bangladesh and Paris. She has collaborated with choreographers to modify and refine dance steps. She has also collaborated with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company in San Francisco. She has performed in various festivals and concerts. Her performances include the opening ceremony of Wills World Cup in 1998, Edinburg Dance festival, Uday Shankar Dance festival and various youth Festivals in New Delhi and Kolkata. Rashmi has a Bachelor in Arts degree and Advanced Diploma in New Style Dance Arts and a Teachers’ Training Diploma from Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Arts.
